We don’t yet know how much the Pink Ribbon Rickshaw night at Urmston Men’s Club raised but we do know that we had a ridiculous amount of fun doing it. Whether it was Stretford Band blasting out My Way, The New Commissars’ high tempo footwork to their belting rendition of Papa Was A Rolling Stone or Jade Ash’s River Deep, Mountain High we had a ball. Everyone who was there seemed to have had a great time as well and were amazingly generous, digging deep for entry tickets, the raffle, the spirit draw (booze not Derek Acorah) and just plain old-fashioned chucking the change in the bucket.

We are enormously grateful to everyone who came along and in particular to Ralph, Peter and Sharon at Urmston Men’s Club, to the Club’s Charity Committee, Wally for his excellent compèring, Doreen and Rose for running the raffle, Judy Foster for her skills at collecting change at umbrella point, all the good sports who wore their pink tutus with pride and the local businesses who contributed prizes to the raffle including Niché Hairdressers, The Barmy Olive and The Trafford Centre. A huge thank you to you all and we will update the site as soon as we have the final figure for how much you all raised for Genesis!

Just a quick reminder that Urmston Mens Club are hosting a night for the Pink Ribbon Rickshaw tomorrow (Saturday 5 May) with not one, not two but three acts – The New Commissars, Jade Ash and proceedings opened by the Stretford Band. Get yourselves down there – tickets are only £7.50 (available on the door), food is available and the bar’s open late! Proceeds are, of course, going to Genesis.

Lord Corky gets in the spirit

TV stars, footballers, fashion shows and tutus, we’ve had it all today. To Genesis for the Black White Denim super sale – 60% off fabulous clothes with 10% of the proceeds to Genesis. As well as picking up a bargain or two we also picked up a celebrity passenger or three – the gorgeous Jenny Powell and the equally gorgeous (once they’d donned their tutus) footballers Chris Makin and Micky Gray, all being great sports in support of Genesis.

The trip home was some more good on-the-road experience, the highlight of which was a close run thing between managing to trigger a 30mph zone slow down sign and the looks on the faces of shoppers in Wilmslow as we roared through town. The Black White Denim sale continues tomorrow at the Genesis Centre – get yourselves down there.

Photoshoot & A New Video!

Cerise pink boiler-suits, baby pink t-shirts and matching fingerless cycling gloves turned out to be a very effective uniform yesterday. Not only did everyone turning up at the Genesis Centre ask us for parking directions (why?!) but we seemed to be able to run, jump and pull Charlie’s Angels poses around a very public car park with none of the usual embarrassment you might expect. Or perhaps it was the confidence bolstering effect of Peter Richardson our professional photographer for the day who inspired us with his warmth, confidence and humour to ever more absurd poses. After all, if he could stand in the middle of the road, back to the bus bearing down on him, just to get the best shot of the three of us next to the entrance sign, we couldn’t back down either.

Peter has very kindly agreed to help out Genesis for a year and as part of that had offered us a shoot to get some great images for our media campaign and hopefully for this website. Peter specialises in documentary photography and has worked all over the world with his latest work being a portrait of Pashtun villagers. Peter is also the founder and course director of the Manchester Academy of Photography.

We had chosen the Genesis Centre as the best venue for our photoshoot and it was the first outing for the now fully pinked-up rickshaw and for our pink outfits. Judging by the reactions we were getting the overall ensemble is pretty eye-catching. As the April showers moved in and despite the research study going on, the ladies manning the Genesis shop very kindly insisted we wheel the rickshaw in and get some photos inside, cue a lot of hilarity amongst those waiting in the foyer as the girls struck poses and Peter rolled around the floor going for the perfect angle.

Mr Rickshaw’s view of the day is below as is a short video of the antics – well worth a look if we say so ourselves. In the meantime, we can’t wait to see the proper photographs when they are ready. Thanks very much again Peter.

Mr Rickshaw writes: Well, I was loving it this morning, I made my first professional runway appearance at a photo shoot with Peter at the Genesis Centre in my full glory. The girls accompanied me and debuted in their fetching hot pink boiler suits. We caused a bit of a stir when the girls wheeled me into the Genesis centre reception for me to show off. It was a bit of a squeeze to say the least getting through the entrance doors but it was well worth it – I am officially the first ever Rickshaw to enter a hospital – get me! Training Day – new video

The team were up early this morning, taking the rickshaw to a secret location for some driver training. There were a few shakes, stalls and moments along the way but eventually… well a picture paints a thousand words so at 25 frames per second here’s 5,675,000 words….

Finish Line Party!

Been a little too long since there was a new blog entry – never fear though much pinkness has been going on – we’ve been buried in pink glittery netting from exclusive official PRR tailor Mr B of BW for a new roof lining – the blue gingham just wasn’t cutting it. We’ve also been working on some more pre trip fundraising and getting some rickshaw piloting outfits pulled together (preview soon – any guesses what colour they might be?!).

Meanwhile, very exicitngly, we can reveal the ticket you need this year for the event you need to be seen at. Everything crossed(!), the Pink Ribbon Rickshaw will make it back to Cheshire late afternoon on Sunday 8 July and the finish line is going to be at Panacea Alderley Edge. The team at Panacea are very generously helping us to lay on the finish line party of our dreams with champagne and canapés, an auction and raffle (with some very, very good prizes), videos and pictures from the trip around the UK and more besides. Tickets are £20 (with proceeds after costs going to Genesis) – e-mail us now to purchase your tickets for what is going to be a fantastic evening.

Pink is the Colour

It’s been a busy couple of weeks in Camp Rickshaw. We’ve been beavering away organising some events, some of which are on the Events page and some of which we’ll be announcing soon. Urmston Mens Club have very kindly agreed to organise a musical evening on 5 May with the eclectic but electric pairing of Stretford Band (all your favourite brass band hits since the nineteenth century) and The New Commissars (all your favourite soul and Motown hits). For those of a nervous disposition, don’t worry – the brass band will be (a) sticking to its modern repertoire including a mean Bohemian Rhapsody and (b) finishing early for the main event. Tickets via us or the Club are £7.50 and include a hotpot supper.

We’ve also been busy doing a full pimp my ride effort on the rickshaw. The seats have all been pulled out and we’ve been wielding staple guns to re-trim them in pink grain effect leatherette (rubber backed no less). Next we took a world position in pink self adhesive vinyl and have covered the ‘shaw in stickers; pink ribbons, URLs, Genesis logos and twitter handles. It’s looking…. eye-catching, if not the subtlest vehicle on the road. The trouble with these things though is that once you start…. Just wait and see what’s coming next.

The indignity of it all. You have no idea of what I’ve been through. I was minding my own business, doing the odd bit of taxiing when I was dumped in a boat, dragged across the seas and now I’m sitting in the coldest, wettest place you could imagine. To add insult to injury someone’s started plastering stickers that are as pink as Jaipur all over me. They’ve also been, and I put this in the most delicate way I can, measuring up my cushions. I dread to think what’s coming next.

Welcome to the Pink Ribbon Rickshaw website and thank you very much for visiting; we really appreciate your support. We’re very pleased to get the public face of the Pink Ribbon Rickshaw up and running. On the right hand side you will see links to the Genesis Appeal, our JustGiving site and our Twitter feed. You can also find pages about us, the rickshaw, our planned route and our sponsors. We have lots of events in planning and as they are confirmed we will be adding them to the Events page.

The Genesis Breast Cancer Prevention Appeal is the only charity in the UK entirely dedicated to the prevention of breast cancer. Genesis “punches above its weight through smart collaborations with the best people in the field nationally and internationally, and through joint funding of projects with other organisations” *. In 2007, Genesis opened the Nightingale Centre in Manchester, Europe’s first purpose-built Breast Cancer Prevention Centre. One in ten women and one in one thousand men will develop breast cancer during their lifetime, a third of these will never be cured. Only 2% of all cancer research funding is spent on prevention so while Genesis’ income is modest, we think its work is vital.
